Karen Gunderson: Dark Waves Rising
Yancey Richardson Gallery, West 22nd Street 525, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
"Karen Gunderson: Dark Waves Rising" is an exhibition of new paintings, the artist's first solo show in New York in over ten years and her first with the gallery since joining in 2025. Karen Gunderson debuts works from two series, Moon and Water, shaped over several decades: the Water paintings grow from her own photographs taken while whale watching on Cape Cod or overlooking the Hudson River behind her studio, while the Moon paintings respond to reports that corporations were considering advertising in space and imagine defending the moon from human greed. Over some forty years Gunderson has built a technique using black pigments and intense brushwork and layering to achieve a three-dimensional effect, and Dark Waves Rising presents the first canvases in which she adds blue pigments to render a radiant, jewel-like ocean. An opening reception takes place on the first day from 6 to 8PM, and the exhibition remains on view through December 19, 2026.
