About
Somewhere in the Night is a screening of a 1946 American film noir about an amnesiac ex-Marine who returns to his native Los Angeles to search its nightclubs, sanitariums, and docks for clues to his identity and traces of a mysterious stranger named Larry Cravat. Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz made it as his sophomore effort behind the camera, a sinisterly atmospheric and deliriously disorienting story that one paper called a nervous nightmare. The hero's quest entangles him with the criminal underworld, a rogue's gallery of unusual characters played by Richard Conte, Josephine Hutchinson, and Fritz Kortner, and a hunt for Nazi-plundered treasure.
