About
Jean Renoir's final Hollywood feature, made in 1947, follows a Coast Guard officer haunted by a maritime tragedy who becomes bewitched by the wife of a blind painter, a dark beauty he meets while riding at the seaside, his attraction by no means unrequited. Starring Robert Ryan and Joan Bennett, it is a disarmingly frank depiction of consuming, destructive erotic obsession, with a brooding, elemental score by Hanns Eisler that deepens the sense of gathering doom.
