A screening of the drama film The Souvenir. Director Joanna Hogg offers a keenly observed, sometimes bruising portrayal of toxic romance set in 1980s Britain, starring Honor Swinton Byrne as Julie, an aspiring filmmaker who begins a relationship with Anthony (Tom Burke), a slightly older Foreign Office man whose intelligence and worldliness can't compensate for his addiction and manipulation. Hogg's compositional rigor serves enormously empathic semi-autobiographical storytelling, using flashback inserts to plumb the psychology of a hopelessly dysfunctional relationship.
