Yining Fei: Feral Sediment
Sculpture Center, Purves Street 44-19, 11101 Long Island City, Queens
About
Yining Fei: Feral Sediment is the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States, on view at SculptureCenter in Long Island City. Yining Fei, who was born in Harbin, China, and works across sculpture, moving image, and installation, centers the show on the milu (Père David's deer), a species that lived in semi-captivity in China, went locally extinct there in the early 20th century, and survived only through a small number taken to European zoos. Prompted by the question of whether a drive towards the unruly exists after centuries of captivity, the exhibition reimagines a deer's body and invents an interiority shaped by the species' histories of domestication. Ceramic sculptures in the form of deer viscera with a biomimetic glaze, found fabric, and light trace feral relations negotiating care and release, containment and transgression.
