About

Anicka Yi: Message from the Mud is an exhibition running from May 17 to November 9, 2026, presenting the artist's first large-scale outdoor installation. Anicka Yi, an American artist born in South Korea in 1971, arranges the work like an archaeological dig, inviting viewers to engage with deep geological time and evolutionary history through what she calls "prehistoric biofiction." Rising from a shallow pool at the center of the excavated site are acrylic columns filled with soil-and-water cultures, made using a technique invented by ecologist Sergei Winogradsky, in which algae, cyanobacteria, and microbial colonies emerge in colorful layers visible through the clear surfaces. The installation is organized by Nora Lawrence and Adela Goldsmith.
