About
«Ascenseur pour l’échafaud» is a feature film by Louis Malle from France, shown as a thriller. Julien Tavernier murders the husband of his lover Florence, but the perfect crime fails through a chain of unfortunate accidents: as he tries to leave the scene, he gets stuck in the elevator, trapped in a metallic cell, while Florence wanders all night aimlessly through the neon-lit streets of Paris searching for him. Louis Malle broke with the conventions of French cinema at the time, capturing the real nighttime atmosphere of Paris instead of stiff studio shots; when the rough cut felt cold, Miles Davis improvised the soundtrack with his musicians in a single night in 1957 and transformed the film. It stars Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, alongside Lino Ventura and others.
