"Wives III (Hustruer III)" is a 1996 Norwegian feature film by Anja Breien. It concludes a trilogy about three women past fifty who, disappointed again and again, keep searching for love without ever slipping into cynicism or bitterness. The film opens on Kaja's birthday, as she declares it the first day of the rest of everyone's life, and shows the three friends facing illness and generational conflicts while holding on to their dreams with wisdom and a kind of hedonism. Along the way it takes up social themes such as racism, violence and the role of education, moving between comic and touching scenes.
