About
A 1930 feature film directed by Richard Oswald, the first filmic examination of the causes of the First World War, shown in a digitized, restored version. On June 28, 1914, the Austrian heir to the throne Franz-Ferdinand and his wife are killed in an assassination in the Serbian city of Sarajevo. The deed of the Serbian student and freedom fighter Gavrilo Princip sets off a chain of feverish meetings in the government centers of the European great powers, which a few weeks later lead into the First World War. The film was made in late autumn 1930 based on Dr. Eugen Fischer's 1928 work »Die kritischen 39 Tage. Von Sarajewo bis zum Weltbrand«.

Critics
Critics praise the consistent realization and especially Reinhold Schünzel's compelling performance as the Tsar. They fault the blurring line between reportage and drama and the difficulty of shaping the material into personal destinies.
