As part of the Queer Thursay series, the Stadtteilbibliothek Buch hosts a talk followed by conversations with contemporary witnesses. Frauke Hippler, a cultural scholar who completed her master's degree at the University of Leipzig, tracked down and examined coded contact ads placed by women who loved women in the Wochenpost, one of the most widely read magazines of the GDR. Being lesbian was long taboo in the GDR, and with no official meeting places, women* sought all kinds of ways to find like-minded people – the ads speak their own language. The talk explores this hidden chapter and these routes of making contact.
