Räume der Sehnsucht – Surrealismus und magischer Realismus der Kunst in der DDR

"Räume der Sehnsucht – Surrealismus und magischer Realismus der Kunst in der DDR" is an exhibition about surrealism and magical realism in art from the German Democratic Republic. It is organised by the Stiftung Kunstforum Berliner Volksbank together with its Kunstsammlung der Berliner Volksbank, showing around 50 loans and works from the Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg plus pieces by Werner Tübke, Clemens Gröszer, Willi Sitte, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Annette Krisper-Bešlić, Wolfgang Peuker, Hubertus Giebe and Peter Sylvester on loan from the Kunstsammlung der Berliner Volksbank. The works explore space constructions of the Pittura Metafisica, dreamlike scenes, grotesque landscapes and enigmatic creatures that carry European surrealism forward. Serving no political purpose, they form an artistic refuge in another reality where hope, doubt, resistance and resignation become central themes.
