About
"ZEIT-Recherchen: War Opa ein Nazi?" is a talk as part of a discourse event on the anniversary of the November pogroms of 1938. Caterina Lobenstein speaks with Götz Aly and Christian Staas, in cooperation with DIE ZEIT. Millions of Germans were in the Wehrmacht and the NSDAP, yet many of their descendants knew nothing about it; recently anyone can search the membership files for relatives with just a few clicks. The discussion asks what looking into one's own family reveals about German culture of remembrance, when coming to terms with the past becomes honest confrontation or merely a soothing ritual, and how remembrance changes as more Germans have no personal connection to the Nazi era.
