About
Adriana Mater is a rarely staged opera about war, redemption and motherhood, performed by the English National Opera. It was written by the composer Kaija Saariaho, named 'Greatest living composer' in a 2019 BBC Music Magazine poll, together with the writer and war correspondent Amin Maalouf, and inspired by his experiences and her reflections on motherhood. Amid a brutal civil war, Adriana, left pregnant after an assault by a soldier, raises her son Yonas with love and hope; when he discovers the truth about his father, she must convince him that true strength lies in mercy rather than revenge. This staging, an ENO debut uniting Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon and Music Director Designate André de Ridder, features Kristina Stanek in the title role.
