About

To Die for [A Comedy] is a comic opera in two acts staged by the English National Opera at the London Coliseum. It was composed by British-Russian Elena Langer with a libretto by Arkady Zastyrets, translated into English by Maggie F. Gottlieb, and is directed by Sam Brown, Artistic Director of the Nederlandse Reisopera. Based on Nikolai Erdman's twice-banned 1928 play The Suicide, it follows unemployed Semyon Podsekayev, whose planned suicide in 1990s Russia is hijacked by crooks who make it famous and broadcast it live on television. This darkly funny black farce is a satire on our fixation on fame and the exploitation of other people's misery for profit and entertainment.
