About

An opera performed at the London Coliseum by the English National Opera. Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves is adapted from Lars von Trier's multi-award-winning 1996 film and directed by Tinuke Craig with Joana Carneiro conducting, starring Lauren Snouffer as Bess and Liam James Karai as Jan. On a remote Scottish island, the devout Bess marries oil rig worker Jan, but when an accident leaves him paralysed he asks her to have sex with other men and describe it to him, which she takes as a test of faith. The hauntingly beautiful story explores love, faith, heartbreak and loss, set to a hypnotic score influenced by Britten and Philip Glass.
