About
A jazz evening with Family Band playing two sets at Vortex Jazz Club. The quartet unites four long-term collaborators and friends: Kim Macari on trumpet, Riley Stone-Lonergan on tenor saxophone, Tom Rivière on double bass and Steve Hanley on drum kit. Their starting point is the freewheeling music of the musicians at the forefront of the 1960s free jazz revolution, whose opening up of jazz's constraints is now seen as an integral part of the music's development. Rather than recreating the work of Ornette Coleman and others, the band shares its powerful momentum, combining fierce intensity, introspection and the blues into an emotionally complex and often cathartic whole.
