Opera Double Bill: Menotti’s 'Amelia al ballo' & Bernstein’s 'Trouble in Tahiti'
Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DT London, Barbican
£30 (£15 concessions)
About
An evening of two one-act operas: the UK premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's sparkling comic opera 'Amelia al ballo', sung in Italian with English surtitles, and Leonard Bernstein's jazz-inflected 'Trouble in Tahiti', both set in the 1950s. The production is performed by Guildhall's young artists, with Dominic Wheeler conducting and Ashley Dean directing, alongside designer Adam Wiltshire. It explores two marriages in two worlds, as the irrepressible Amelia schemes to reach the season's grand ball, while the couple Dinah and Sam find the American dream leaves them deeply unhappy.
