About

An exhibition bringing together a selection of works from the historic gift of Peggy Cooper Cafritz's art collection to the Studio Museum in Harlem, running through February 28, 2027. Cafritz (1947–2018), an arts patron, educator, and civil rights activist who cofounded the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, bequeathed the majority of her collection to the museum. Her bequest included over four hundred works by more than two hundred artists of African descent, spanning paintings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, and works on paper. This is the first exhibition to tell a story of Cafritz as an art collector, organized by curator Connie H. Choi and curatorial assistant Kiki Teshome.
