Jasper Johns: a whole can be only a part
Matthew Marks Gallery, West 24th Street 523, 10011 New York, Manhattan
About
An exhibition of seventy works on paper by Jasper Johns, spanning more than six decades. It was organized by Jessica Eisenthal, the inaugural Jasper Johns Curatorial Fellow at the Powers Art Center, working with the Ryobi Foundation's collection. The works are arranged alphabetically by title, using the alphabet as a found structure that mirrors Johns's own interest in signs, seriality, language and chance. The title comes from a poem the American composer John Cage wrote about the artist, and refers to the relationship between a fragment and its whole, a central preoccupation in Johns's work.
