About

Native Voices Karenna—Lay Our Vibration Down is an evening in the Gardiner Foundation Great Hall Forum presenting the New York-stage premieres of two short operas, Trials and Tears and Sacajawea: Women of Many Names. Both pieces are by Dawn Avery, a Grammy-nominated cellist-composer of Mohawk descent, with Danielle Olana Jagelski (Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and Red Cliff Band of Ojibwe) as music director and original video design by Kate Freer. Trials and Tears, a collaboration with artist Ty Defoe commissioned by New Music Theatre Alliance in 2022, responds to Benny Andrews' painting Trail of Tears and connects the forced resettling of Indigenous people with trials leading to incarceration of minorities. Sacajawea: Women of Many Names, made with librettist-soprano Blake Hill-Saya and Shoshone Advisor Francesca Mason Boring, shows Sacajawea from the perspective of her Shoshone ancestral traditions, unfettered from Western mythologies about her life and motivations.
