About
An evening lecture and book talk, open to the public in the Members' Room and online, presented by The New York Society Library. Writer and Hunter College professor Victoria Johnson presents her new biography of the 19th-century American painter Frederic Church, published on the artist's bicentennial. Drawing on Church's letters, sketches, diaries, and travels to places like Egypt, the Andes, and Jerusalem, she shows how his landscapes of remote lands and seas put American art on the map of world culture. Church, a founder of New York's first great museum, the Met, is portrayed as an adventurer who turned landscape painting into a portrait of a nation.
