The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans
Whitney Museum of American Art, Gansevoort Street 99, 10014 New York, Manhattan
About
The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans is a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, on view on Floor 8. It presents the visionary work of Minnie Evans (1892–1987), who began drawing in 1935 after the death of her grandmother, inspired by vivid dreams and visions. Over the following decades she made hundreds of radiant pencil and crayon drawings, oil paintings, and collages combining imagery from her Afro-Caribbean heritage, mythology, religion, popular culture, decorative arts, and the natural environment of her native Wilmington, North Carolina. Her dense, kaleidoscopic compositions of angels, mythical creatures, and watchful faces imagine a protective, spiritual province before the biblical flood—what she called the "lost world."
