About
An evening marking 40 years of the Umwelt-Bibliothek Berlin, founded in 1986 in East Berlin, which grew into an important center of GDR opposition. Using selected original documents from the Archive of the GDR Opposition, it shows how independent information was collected there and samizdat publications were produced and distributed to break the state's information monopoly. Organized by the Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft e. V. as part of Berlin Freedom Week, it features contemporary witness Tim Eisenlohr, Belarusian journalist and former political prisoner Ksenija Luzkina, and journalist Sham Jaff, who speak about opposition media work, state censorship, and the role of international media. The evening opens with young people presenting the results of their podcast project “MIC Check: Demokratie!”, moderated by journalist and author Shila Behjat.
