Hella De Santarossa "Ins Offene" – Bilder der Wendezeit in Berlin
Beyond Reality, Charlottenburg
About
The exhibition „Ins Offene – Bilder der Wendezeit in Berlin“ presents photographs and paintings by Hella De Santarossa, who since the fall of the Wall in 1989 has approached the changing city of Berlin in a new way. Born in Düsseldorf in 1949, the artist was a defining figure of the Junge Wilde in the 1980s and has since combined photography and painting into a distinctive visual language. She photographs buildings, unfinished structures and construction sites, including the „Löwenbauten“ such as the Reichstag, the Federal Chancellery and the new buildings at Potsdamer Platz, and reworks the enlarged images in expressive, multi-layered layers of colour on canvas or paper. Her works preserve a moment in which Berlin is in transition, between the end of the old and the still open beginning of the new.
