The Stegreif Orchester performs Mahler's melodies with eleven musicians from his symphonies, Das Lied von der Erde and the Wunderhorn songs with improvisatory ease. Under the musical direction of Tadashi Fork, four composer teams with very different sound languages were commissioned to each arrange one movement. The programme draws on different works by Gustav Mahler, joined by the shared theme of nature, confronting this ease with transience and destruction, as Mahler did. It asks how artists can use music to stimulate thought, shake people awake and contribute to a change of awareness in the face of climate change.
