Sunday in the Park with George is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It is inspired by Georges Seurat's painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and follows George, a fictional Seurat painting his masterpiece, and his great-grandson, another fictional George, an artist facing similar problems in modern Chicago. The Broadway production opened in 1984, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the following year, and later received Olivier Awards including Best Musical.
