A Rosy Fingered Dawn

About
"A Rosy Fingered Dawn" is an exhibition of new paintings by Jocelyn Hobbie at the gallery Fredericks & Freiser. Hobbie has developed a pictorial language over more than three decades in which beauty, eroticism, mortality, and psychological distance define her women, with pattern organizing the image and acting as a protective membrane around the figure. For the first time, the nude becomes a sustained subject, while owls, butterflies, and gold leaf move the works toward the visual language of emblem, allegory, and icon. Her painstakingly finished paintings, often only about four each year, arrest transience, keeping her women vivid yet never fully knowable.
