About
Spring Awakening is a Tony Award-winning rock musical returning to New York in a new revival. Its book and lyrics are by Steven Sater and its music is by Duncan Sheik, adapted from Frank Wedekind's once-controversial 1891 play about the sexual awakening and self-discovery of a group of German schoolkids in the late 19th century. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor, transforms the original text's repressed teenagers into creative dreamers, schemers, and rebellious rock stars through an electrifying indie-rock-infused score. Its debut Broadway run in 2006 garnered eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Direction, Book, and Score.
