The Invisible World in a Drop of Water: Diatoms, Biodiversity and Time
Botanischer Garten, Königin-Luise-Straße 6, 14195 Berlin, Lichterfelde

About
A public guided tour at the Botanic Garden that opens up the world of microscopic algae, the diatoms. Scientists of the garden open their research to visitors: Dr. Nelida Abarca leads through the subject, showing how these organisms invisible to the naked eye play a crucial role in global ecosystems, produce a significant share of the oxygen we breathe and act as sensitive witnesses to environmental change in our waters. A hands-on microscopy session offers the rare chance to observe them up close, followed by a visit to the garden's diatom collections, including the renowned Friedrich Hustedt Collection, built over more than a century. The event is held in cooperation with the Berliner Mikroskopische Gesellschaft and is part of the Berlin Science Week 2026 programme.
